Abstract:The finite element method was used to analyze the mechanical behavior of asphalt pavement structure with an inverted base layer. Results show that the tensile stress takes effect at the bottom of surface layer for inverted base layer structure and with increase in load, the stress becomes linear increase approximately. The tensile stress at the bottom of base layer for inverted base layer structure is much smaller than that for typical semi rigid base layer structure, that means the inverted base layer structure has a better crack resistance than typical semi rigid base layer structure. Pressure stress always takes effect at the bottom of macadam layer.
