Abstract:Structural performance of reinforced concrete member is based on bond strength between concrete and reinforcement, and adequate end anchorage at supports. However, environmental attacks, chloride contamination and carbonation of concrete cover for example, may lead to corrosion of reinforcing bar in concrete. Further,an increasing expansion of corrosion products will result in longitudinal cracking of cover concrete. Thus, weakening of the bond which directly affects the load carrying capacity and serviceability for concrete members within structures is induced. In this paper, the mechanism of deterioration in bond between corroded bars and concrete, and effects of loss in bond on structural performance of member are summarized.
