On SHRP:Twenty Five Years Review and Outlook

Abstract:
It has been 25 years since SHRP was born in 1987, which serves as an important milestone for asphalt technology development. Its progress includes well known PG based binder test series and gyration method in making HMA specimens, as well as the removal of limit on asphalt content imposed by Marshall design. The advancement of modified asphalt technology is another outcome made by SHRP. It should be pointed out that the coarse based aggregate gradation introduced in SHRP gives rise to diversity in designing HMA, and provides the new mechanism of force transfer within HMA by the contacts among coarse aggregates. But its effort to develop performance based HMA test method has met huge challenges and has not yet concluded the development. It is hoped that the endeavors to advance asphalt technology will continue in post SHRP era.
